FAQs

WHAT TIME SHOULD I BE THERE?

Check-in is 5:30 am at the latest, and you can board California Dawn as early as 4:30 am. The boat leaves at 6:00 am, prompt. Please remember to be on time.

Missing the boat will result in a full fare charge to the card on file.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

For full day fishing trips, please consider bringing:

• Camera or phone for pictures

• Sunglasses & sunscreen

• Jacket or windbreaker (dress in layers)

• Medications, including motion sickness remedies

• Fishing license

• Cash for gratuities, fish cleaning and/or tackle

FISHING LICENSES

You need a basic California sport fishing license. No extra stamps are needed. Children under 16 years do not need a license.

Visit the Department of Fish and Wildlife website to purchase yours. Licenses are checked before we leave the dock. Don’t forget yours!

CAN I BRING A COOLER?

Small, personal size coolers are allowed.  We do ask that passengers use discretion when choosing the right cooler for their trip.  Please remember, we are working with limited space.

Our crew reserves the right to ask passengers to condense and return oversized coolers to their vehicle prior to departure.

A good rule of thumb, “if its big enough to need wheels, its too big for the boat.”

CAN I BRING MY OWN TACKLE?

Everyone is free to bring their own tackle. However, we strongly suggest using the tackle provided by California Dawn. We use the best quality tackle for your fishing experience, and have been doing this professionally for decades.

ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED?

Our fishing trips are a great way to get new anglers hooked!

Although there is no set minimum age, we do ask that each party has adequate adults to tend to the younger ones.  While our crew is there to help and give guidance, they are not responsible for the care of children onboard.

A 50% discount is given onboard the boat Monday – Thursday for children ages 12 and under, excluding specials and crab combos.

HOW MUCH IS RENTAL GEAR?

A rod & reel is $20. Tackle prices vary based off of weather conditions, fish and availability, and ranges from $6-12.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

We ask that all changes or cancellations are made a minimum of 48 hours prior to the trip for parties of 5 or less.  Parties of 6 or more is 1 week.

Any empty spots on boat due to cancellations within this window will result in full fare charges to the credit card on file.

WHY DO YOU NEED MY CREDIT CARD INFO?

Your card information is collected in case you don’t show up for your appointment without giving us 48 hours notice. You will not be charged the full-amount during checkout. Instead, you will see a “Pending” charge in your account of $0.01 which is necessary to process this transaction. The “Pending” charge will likely last for up to three (3) business days before it is dismissed.

WHAT COULD I CATCH?

BAY: Halibut, striped bass, white sea bass, sharks, and salmon
ISLANDS: Lingcod and rockfish
OCEAN: All species

We will be “fishing” and not “catching.” Have realistic expectations of what you’ll go home with. Catching fish depends on a number of things: type of trip booked, conditions (water temp, currents), bait, tackle, the fish themselves, and luck.

Leave those expectations on the dock, fish responsibly, and most importantly… have fun!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Expect to have a great time! The California Dawn crew is one of the best in the fleet. Our trips promptly depart the landing at 6:00 am (you need to be there no later than 5:30 am), and return in the neighborhood of 4:00 pm, depending on fishing and weather conditions. We fish all day until it’s time to head home. The crew will filet and bag all of your fish for you for a small fee per fish.

Thirty minutes or so before we hit the dock, we collect fish cleaning and galley tabs and ask that you pack all your stuff up. Once we hit the dock, you can take your bags and gear to your cars and grab an ice chest if you brought one. This is where we say goodbye, thanks, and see you again very soon!
